Why the Kentucky Derby?

Every first Saturday in May, the air crackles with excitement as horse racing enthusiasts and casual fans alike gather to celebrate the Kentucky Derby, often referred to as “the most exciting two minutes in sports.” But for many, this day has taken on a deeper significance through the annual event known as Ron's Run for the Roses, a gala that honors the memory of Ron Foley while raising crucial funds for pancreatic cancer research.

Ron Foley, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2005, always loved a celebration with family and friends, and always loved a race – whether it was horses or cars! While watching the Derby, Barbara Foley, along with family members, conceived the idea of a fundraising event that would not only celebrate Ron’s life but also contribute to a cause that deeply affected them all. The decision to theme the event around the Kentucky Derby was a natural fit. Ron's enthusiasm for sports, competition, and entertainment mirrored the excitement of the Derby, making it a meaningful way to celebrate his life.

The first Ron's Run for the Roses took place in the Foley’s backyard, where friends and family came together, sharing stories, laughter, and the thrill of the races. What started as an intimate gathering quickly blossomed into an annual tradition, honoring Ron’s legacy while raising awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer research. Just as the Derby brings people together to cheer for their favorite horses, Ron's Run for the Roses fosters a supportive environment where attendees rally around a shared cause. The event now draws hundreds of people from all over, and takes place at the picturesque Farmington Polo Club.

Ron's Run for the Roses is a heartfelt celebration of a man who loved life, competition, and bringing people together. By choosing to host this event on Derby Day, Barbara and the Foley family have created a beautiful legacy that honors Ron while also shining a light on the urgent need for pancreatic cancer research. In doing so, they continue to inspire others to join the fight, ensuring that Ron’s spirit lives on in every race, every cheer, and every dollar raised.
